About

We have an extensive catalogue of psychiatry and clinical psychology training DVDs available to purchase. Illustrated with role-played scenarios, the training programmes demonstrate guidelines to clinical identification, treatment, and the management of a wide range of mental health problems.

Video content

All of our video content is produced in-house by mental-healthcare professionals working at The University of Manchester and in the NHS.

These in-depth learning resources are specifically made for mental health professionals, such as:

  • GPs
  • trainee psychiatrists and psychologists
  • primary carers
  • counsellors
  • other mental-health professionals.

The programmes are accompanied by extensive notes and are designed to develop successful treatment techniques, such as cognitive behavioural therapy, suicide prevention, problem solving and counselling skills.

Covering topics from child and adolescent psychiatry to schizophrenia, our video catalogue features training for a variety of mental-health professionals.

Understanding child and adolescent psychiatry

This video features the common clinical disorders covered in child psychiatry:

  • depression and self-harm
  • eating disorders
  • attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • conduct disorder
  • somatisation
  • autism.

Each subject is covered in-depth, with a dedicated DVD chapter, and demonstrates the main clinical features of these principle disorders. Each section includes role-played scenarios, voice-over and teaching graphics.

The video is part of a package designed for medical students at The University of Manchester, as part of their child and families module.

In providing a greater understanding of the mental health needs of young people, the DVD has application to a wide range of practitioners, from primary care through to specialist services.

The interviewing practitioners in the video are all active child psychiatrists, while the children and families are played by actors.

CBT for anxiety in adolescents

This two part video demonstrates a cognitive behavioural approach for treating anxiety in children and adolescents.

The aim is to demonstrate the main techniques described in the manual and to highlight some of the issues which arise in therapy.

The video consists of a brief introduction to the programme followed by two vignettes, showing therapy scenes. The first, Katie, demonstrates the use of therapy with the younger age group while the second, Andrew, shows work with adolescents and focuses on the later stages of therapy, particularly cognitive techniques.

This video looks at a four-stage model for managing the somatic presentation of emotional distress:

  • feeling understood;
  • changing the agenda;
  • making the link;
  • negotiating treatment.

Presented by Dr Linda Gask, the video examines in-depth techniques in the first part of the video while opportunities to practice the skills are provided in the second part.

The video is aimed primarily at GPs.

Helping people at risk of suicide or self-harm

This video is aimed at all frontline health workers who come into contact with potentially suicidal people. The aim of the teaching programme is to develop confident skills in assessing suicidal risk and to improve techniques in managing situations where people are at risk of self-harm.

The video is presented by Dr Linda Gask and is illustrated with role-played scenarios in four sections:

  • assessment
  • crisis management
  • problem solving
  • crisis prevention.

This video now forms part of a full suicide-prevention training package (STORM), available to organisations, and delivered by trained facilitators. The package should be ordered directly from the STORM team.

Promoting change: helping people with alcohol problems in primary care

Presented by Dr Linda Gask, this video outlines a set of behavioural skills and strategies that can be useful in successfully promoting behaviour change. The video primarily focuses on helping people with alcohol problems, but the skills demonstrated can be applied to a range of issues such as smoking or diet-related problems, in a range of primary care settings.

Depression and suicidal behaviour in adolescents

This video aims to inform GPs how to identify and help young people with depression or suicidal ideation who present in their surgeries. Divided into three sections – Recognition, Assessment, and Management – clinical skills are demonstrated through role-played scenarios.

This video is presented by Dr Alison Wood, Dr John Miller and Professor Richard Harrington.

CBT for depressed adolescents

This video describes a cognitive behavioural intervention specifically aimed at adolescents with depression. The first section summarises the theoretical underpinnings of treatment.

Section two demonstrates, using case vignettes and role-play therapy situations, the programme of CBT that we have developed in Manchester. The final section discusses difficulties and problems in working in this treatment modality with adolescents and their families.

The video is presented by Professor Richard Harrington and Chrissie Verduyn and is aimed at existing mental-healthcare professionals.

Counselling depression in primary care

This video, presented by Dr Linda Gask, deals with behavioural and cognitive approaches to the counselling of depression in primary care settings. It explores a collaborative approach to helping patients find solutions to their problems themselves. It is also part of the Defeat Depression campaign.

Part 1 – Recognition in general practice, presented by Professor Goldberg and Dr Linda Gask

The video, which is part of the Defeat Depression campaign, draws attention to the skills doctors must have to detect and evaluate depressive illness through role-played scenarios and a panel discussion.

Part 2 – How to plan and assess treatment, presented by Dr Linda Gask

This video, which is also part of the Defeat Depression campaign, explores the skills that are necessary to assess depression as it presents itself in primary care. It also looks at the further skills and strategies that are important in negotiating a treatment plan with the patient.

Depression in general medical settings: methods of detection, assessment and treatment

Presented by Dr Graeme McGrath and Professor Goldberg, this video is aimed at helping physicians in general medical settings to identify the symptoms of depression in their patients and to decide on the appropriate treatment. The videovideos are accompanied by notes, A Guide for Teachers and A Guide for Students.

Part 1 – Detecting and evaluating

Outlines the detection and assessment of depression using role-played patients. Suggests useful ways to classify and rate severity of depression.

Part 2 – Treatment

Medical students are shown how to diagnose depression, deal with emotion and decide on appropriate physical treatment if they are not referring on. Emphasises the need for clear explanation and careful treatment to minimise the patient’s distress.

Problem-based interviewing in general practice

Presented by Art Lesser, this video is designed to help students identify and treat underlying problems which cause patients to come to their surgeries.

The video informs about the problem-based technique and how to direct group discussion using video playback.

The diagnosis of schizophrenia

Drawing upon interviews with a number of patients he met in the United States, Professor Goldberg vividly demonstrates most of Schneider’s first-rank symptoms.

Schizophrenia: talking to the relatives

A couple become seriously worried about their son’s strange and difficult behaviour and he is diagnosed as a schizophrenic. Interviews are role-played between the parents and a psychiatrist and then a psychiatric social worker.

Presented by Dr Sidney Benjamin, this video illustrates the various ploys used by treatment-seeking patients, and gives some advice on how to cope with them.

A conversational model of psychotherapy

This three part video is presented by Dr Frank Margison and Dr Robert Hobson.

Part 1 – Basic therapeutic skills

This video shows extracts from four therapists seeing patients. It illustrates examples of basic therapeutic skills and includes a descriptive handout.

Part 2 – Developing a therapeutic conversation

This second video is complementary to the first and shows how the basic therapeutic skills described are combined in therapy.

Part 3 – Structured teaching of psychotherapy

This video covers some of the earlier points using a microskills teaching approach. The video is used with a trainer to give the trainee confidence in using these basic skills.

Seminars in behavioural psychotherapy

A set of two videos, presented by Professor Goldberg, illustrating the work of three behavioural psychotherapists:

There are four suggested seminars including role-playing with commentaries, discussion points and exercises. All have been successfully used and can be easily adapted by course teachers for groups or individual viewing.

Getting started in group psychotherapy

Presented by Dr Digby Tantum and Dr Graeme McGrath, this video is designed to encourage inexperienced professionals to set up analytic therapeutic groups.

The video tackles problems which may be encountered and illustrates how different responses by the therapist produce different results. Aimed at all professionals involved in group work, the video has complementary notes which detail the role-played scenarios and the points raised.

Handling difficult questions

How should doctors and nurses respond to patients who have not been told about their condition?

This video, presented by Dr Peter Maguire, looks at the way a nurse responds to a patient who has cancer of the bowel but has not been told the truth.

Presented by Professor Goldberg, this video deals with the way in which bad news can be broken to the relatives of patients who are suffering a terminal illness.

Presented by Dr Pauline Slade, this video illustrates how to teach relaxation in a clinical setting.

Counselling and the physically disabled

Based on four case studies, the programme helps professionals to understands their client’s crises of identity, low self-esteem, sexuality, loss of control and fears for the future.
